  WINES FROM MEDITERRANEAN ISLANDS

At this time of the year we all should have the opportunity to sip
wine overlooking the waters of the Mediterranean. Well, it may be
out of the question for many of us, so the next best thing is to
bring the wine to you. We offer for tasting wines from five
Mediterranean islands.

1. GREECE’S Ionian Islands are some of the most beautiful in the
Mediterranean – they are far enough north to have much more greenery
than many others. Sitting on the beach in CEPHALONIA (home of
Corelli’s Mandolin), perhaps grilling some sardines, while sipping
the local white grape ROBOLA, can get addictive. This 2005 shows the
classic lemony quality which makes the grape superb with many
shellfish and seafood - $15.00

2. After visiting Greece we now go west to ITALY’S SARDINIA, and one
of the island’s best producers, ARGIOLAS. The 2004 COSTERA is 100%
CANNONAU which is the local clone of GRENACHE. The wine offers lots
of black raspberry fruit with a nice touch of spice on the finish.
This wine is wonderful value (rated in the 90s by Robert Parker) -
$14.50

3. We now go south to SICILY and southern Italy’s signature grape,
NERO d’AVOLA. Many wines from this grape have had a raisiny quality
in the past because of the hot growing season, but now vintners know
how to control this. The 2002 DONNAFUGATA SEDARA RED is 100% NERO
d’AVOLA and offers lots of slightly roasted black fruit with a lovely
touch of spice on the finish. Another wonderful value at $14.50

4. For our final wine in the basic flight we go to France’s
Mediterranean island of CORSICA. DOMAINE MAESTACCI is a leading
producer. The winemaker is Michel Raoust, a native of the Rhône
Valley. He added Rhône varietals to the native grapes SCIARELLO and
NIELLUCIO (thought to be SANGIOVESE) to create the 2003 E PROVE
ROUGE. I do not know the blend of this wine but it tastes like a
wine from BANDOL in PROVENCE - $22.00

TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00

This week we offer TWO EXTRA POURS:

One of SICILY’S dynamic producers is FIRRIATO and they do wonderful
things with the native grapes. However the 2003 SANTAGOSTINO “BAGLIO
SORIA” is a blend of “old Sicily” with modern techniques. It is a
50/50 blend of NERO d’AVOLA and SYRAH, offering a lovely combination
of black fruit, spice and oak. The finish is dynamic and long, and I
think the wine appeals to both “traditionalists” and “New World”
drinkers- $30.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $6.00/4 ounces

Our second “extra pour” is one of the bargain dessert wines of the
world. The COOPERATIVE on the GREEK island of SAMOS has been making
great wine from MUSCAT à PETITS GRAINS since the 1930s. The NV SAMOS
MUSCAT GRAND CRU is styled somewhat after the RHÔNE VALLEY’S BEAUMES-
de-VENISE. It has wonderful aromatics, and a grapey palate which is
balanced by lively acidity. This cuvée is the Greek wine most sold
in France (over 70% of the Co-op’s production goes to France!)
Exceptional value for a 750ml - $18.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $2.00/Taste or $3.50/4 ounces

TASTE BOTH FOR $5.00

SATURDAY, August 12th
